Tier list questions, answered

Common questions from traders evaluating where to open their first (or fifth) crypto account. Have one we haven't covered? Email us.

How do you rank these crypto exchanges?
Each exchange is scored on six axes: liquidity (24h volume + spread depth), fee competitiveness (spot + futures), product breadth (spot, futures, copy, earn, options), regulatory standing (licenses, proof-of-reserves), security record (no major hack in past 36 months), and referral program quality. The composite score determines the overall rank. The 'Best For' categories use the single highest-scoring axis per exchange.
What's the actual best crypto exchange in 2026?
There is no universal answer — it depends on what you trade. Binance is #1 overall for liquidity and beginner-friendliness, OKX is the best all-rounder for pro traders, Bybit dominates day-trading, MEXC has the lowest fees, and Gate.io has the most altcoins. We recommend signing up at 2-3 to lock in the lifetime fee rebates, then concentrating activity on the one that fits your strategy.
Are 'best for' rankings paid placements?
Never. Exchanges cannot pay to rank higher in our tier list. Our revenue comes from referral commissions paid by exchanges when you sign up, but those commissions are roughly the same across major platforms — there is no incentive to rank a worse exchange higher. If anything, ranking accurately drives more sign-ups long-term, which is the model we operate on.
Does ranking change month to month?
Top 5 are typically stable — Binance, OKX, Bybit, Bitget, Gate.io. Below that, exchanges shift positions based on volume changes, regulatory news and fee schedule updates. We re-score every exchange on the 1st of each month. Major changes (hack, regulatory action, major fee shift) trigger an out-of-cycle update.
Why does Binance rank #1 if MEXC has 0% spot fees?
Liquidity matters more than the headline fee for most traders. A 0.10% fee on a tight 0.01% spread is cheaper in total than a 0% fee on a 0.3% spread — which is what you face on illiquid pairs. Binance wins on combined cost. MEXC wins on fee-only cost, which is why it tops the 'Lowest Fees' category.
Should I use just one exchange or several?
Most active traders we know use 2-4 exchanges: a primary for daily volume, a secondary for products the primary lacks, and one or two for specialty cases (high-leverage on Weex, altcoins on MEXC/Gate.io, copy-trading on Bitget). The marginal cost of an extra signup is 60 seconds; the upside is access to a much wider product set.
Are these rankings safe to trust?
Every figure is verified directly against each exchange's official documentation before publication. We re-verify monthly. We do not accept paid rankings, do not run sponsored placements disguised as editorial, and do not rank any exchange we wouldn't personally use. If you find an error, email us and we'll correct within 48 hours.
How do referral codes work and are they safe?
A referral code is just a tracking ID. When you sign up using one, the exchange splits the fees you'd pay anyway — part discounted to you (the lifetime rebate), part paid as commission to the referrer. The exchange controls everything; the referrer never sees your account, your funds, or your trading data. There is no extra cost and no security risk.
